Provo Canyon School: The Beginning
Let us journey through the school history:
- Jack Williams and William H Christ formed the school in 1971 near the Provo Canyon valley area, hence the name of the school.
- Universal Health Services owns Provo Canyon School.
- The main aim of the school was treatment and education of students, who had serious problems in learning, behavior. This treatment required a separate secluded environment with restrictions of access, with specialized therapists involved.
- Apart from these patients, other children who are victims of drug abuse, and those who are socially dysfunctional are also allowed at Provo Canyon.
- Provo Canyon School is a private educational facility; it also receives funding from the federal and the state.
- Students are enrolled at the school when the parents feel that they can't handle the problem themselves.
- The school wants to make the students responsible for their own actions, and the school authorities take several steps towards this aim. One of these steps includes allowing students to take their medicine on their own.
- Boys and girls campuses are separate.
- The boy's campus is at Provo-a city is Utah, while the girl's campus is at Orem, a town located adjacent to Provo.
- The students are mostly between 12 and 17 years of age.
- In 2003, the Provo Canyon School boys organized the first Native American Christmas project.
- In 2001, the school had completed 30 years as a treatment center.
- Apart from treatment for controlling anger and countering drug abuse there is a recreational therapy that includes trips to Northern and Southern Utah.
