Provo Canyon School Child Support Program
Many child support programs are fighting against alcohol and drug abuse cases. The pre-teen years are when children are most vulnerable to the effects of drugs and alcohol. Let us look into alcohol abuse and how it is not similar to alcoholism. Alcohol abuse is a drinking pattern that can be got rid of, while alcoholism is a disease that has no particular cure.
The symptoms of alcohol abuse are thus:
- Lone or secret drinking.
- Forgetfulness.
- Form a regular pattern in daily drinking and are irritated when pattern is changed.
- No longer interested in hobbies and activities.
- Drinking due to anxiety over problems.
The later stage of alcohol abuse leads to alcohol addiction. The symptoms can be such as given below:
- A strong desire to drink.
- Unable to stop drinking, after having begun a drinking session.
- Symptoms of sweating, anxiety, nausea after drinking.
- The uncontrollable requirement to drink alcohol relentlessly.
It is ironical that low or moderate consumption of alcohol is good in case of any heart ailments. But continuous consumption can cause several health problems like:
- Damage to the brain, leading to slower reflexes and spoken memory loss.
- Minor problems like insomnia and headaches.
- About 10% to 35% alcoholics suffer from inflammation in the liver. 10% to 20% of these people develop a condition called cirrhosis, a possibly fatal state resulting in continuous liver scarring.
- Vomiting leading to tear between the esophagus and the stomach.
- Chances on cancer are ten times higher in alcoholics.
- Bone, skin and muscle disorders due to excessive drinking.
- Avoid drinking even moderately during pregnancy period -the consequences can be fatal to the unborn child.
- Alcoholism can make the person vulnerable to other addictions, most likely to cigarette smoking.
- Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a condition that can be caused by excessive drinking.
Substance Abuse Program at Provo Canyon School
The abuse of chemical substances has always been a significant behavior problem of youth who are treated at Provo Canyon School. In the 1970s and 80s, when Provo Canyon School treated youth with predominantly conduct and oppositional defiance disorders, chemical abuse of drugs, such as smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, driving under the influence, and smoking pot (marijuana), was considered as one of the major indicators for youth acting out. Substance abuse was viewed as an expression of socially defiant attitudes and misconduct.
